How It All Started

In late 2008 and early 2009, my blog, www.travellinbaen.com was the site of a vigorous debate over who should be members of the all-time Pascagoula Panthers football team. Over the course of several months, a lot of folks joined the debate, adding old stories and reminding us of forgotten heroes. Then longtime Mississippi Press Register sports editor Mark Bryant suggested we should start a Hall of Fame for all the greats in all sports throughout the county. I thought it was a great idea and we immediately expanded our debate to determine who should be in the Hall and how they should be elected. All of that debate and discussion has been preserved on my personal blog and you should read through it before making any judgment on the status of the Hall as it is today. Let me put it another way. There are an awful lot of deserving athletes to be inducted in the coming years.

That having been said, the inaugural class is a special one. Athletes representing baseball, football, basketball and track are honored. We have a great coach. We honor the living and the deceased. We recognized the contributions of both sexes. If there is one major deficiency it is that a definite bias toward Pascagoula athletes has been present. This is attributable to the people who have so far found our discussion on the internet. Hopefully, some Tigers and Greyhounds, Hornets and Bulldogs and others will join in the discussion and make a pitch for their hometown heroes in next year’s class, to be debated and inducted beginning in January 2010.

This website is a continual work in progress, so check back often for updates, new features and new virtual memorabilia. If you have any comments or information to impart, please leave them where applicable, and if you have any photos or any sporting souvenirs you can photograph, email them to me at ben@travellinbaen.com and I will add them to the site.

I hope you enjoy the tribute I’ve put together along with the readers of the Travellinbaen blog.
